School superintendent pleads guilty to felony theft from Shakopee school district in Minnesota.

Rod Thompson, named superintendent in 2012, used his school-issued credit card to splurge on sports memorabilia, first-class airfare, concert tickets and an Xbox gaming system-dollar budget shortfall. Gene Grugal, who filed data requests seeking the spending reports and then turned them over to police, said he felt relieved. Rod Thompson admitted to swindling tens of thousands of dollars from the Shakopee school district. According to Minnesota Statute theft by swindle, for which Thompson faces six counts, is punishable by a maximum of five to 20 years in prison depending on the amount swindled. Thompson is scheduled to go on trial trial Nov. 27 on 21 charges he swindled and embezzled nearly $74,000 over five years from the Shakopee school district. He is also still scheduled for a Nov. 19 omnibus hearing on the unauthorized computer access charges. If he enters any guilty pleas Tuesday, the trial and omnibus hearing would be cancelled.
