Deltona Middle School treasurer stole $10,000 from the association account in Florida.
Shawn Sablotne, 41, was arrested at her Deltona home Tuesday and charged with grand theft. She is free on $5,000 bail, court records show. She used money to pay expenses including her rent, investigating Volusia sheriff’s deputies said. When deputies made contact with Sablotne at her home, she started crying and admitted taking the money saying, “I’m wanting to pay it back. I just ran low on some funds,” reports detail. “I took the money and I’m sorry,” Sablotne told investigators, reports said. The group discovered the funds were missing from their Wells Fargo bank account after a parent reported to band director Johnathan Thompson on Friday that that a check had bounced. Thompson said Sablotne in April blocked the band teacher’s access to the account’s online banking features but he still had access to the account, investigators said. In reviewing the account statements, Thompson discovered that a large amount of money was missing, including the discovery of two checks made out to Sablotne’s landlord in April and September. Investigators learned that Sablotne, in addition to $7,940 in checks she wrote to herself, she also kept at least $1,763 in cash, her arrest report shows.
